Sperm are produced in the male reproductive organs, specifically in the testes, which are located in the scrotum. The testes are responsible for the production of sperm (spermatogenesis) and the secretion of male sex hormones, primarily testosterone.
Spermatogenesis is a continuous and complex process in which immature germ cells develop into mature sperm cells. The mature sperm are then stored in the epididymis, a coiled tube located on the posterior surface of each testis. From there, they are transported through the vas deferens during ejaculation, ultimately leaving the male body through the urethra.
Sperm are essential for fertilizing a female’s egg, which can lead to the formation of a zygote, and ultimately, the development of an embryo if conditions are conducive to pregnancy.
